How To Design Masks with Artist Alvin Kofi
Description:
Masks are traditionally synonymous with Africa and its different traditions. Using shapes, we will invent, explore and produce a variety of mask designs, using references from some of the most striking mask carvings that have been created throughout Africa. This workshop will allow you to create different personalities through shapes and explore the question, “How would you like to be: Happier, Joyful, Reflective, Insightful, Bolder, Stronger, Peaceful or more Content?”
Materials used:
• A3 paper
• Coloured marker pens or felt tips
• Coloured pencil crayons
• Variety of acrylic paints
• Paint brushes
• Cup of water to wash paint brushes
• Small plate (to draw around)
• Large plate (to draw around)
• Large plastic bottle top (or similar, to draw around)
• Square or rectangle plastic container (to draw around)
Alvin Kofi
A second-generation West Indian, based in UK, Kofi’s career has been strongly associated with the Black UK arts movement. His creative perspective is very much African-centred through which the Black body becomes his muses as he explores traditional notions of African culture and their place in the historical narrative of the Diaspora.
