Beatriz Milhazes
Saturated colour, cascading patterns and distinctly Brazilian forms define the abstract work of Beatriz Milhazes. Her densely layered paintings and collages and intricate sculptures visualise a state of transformation, poised between order and chaos, rational structure and spontaneity, and at the biting point between European and Brazilian modernisms. Often pushed to its compositional limit, her work has an embracing force that pulls the viewer in. Yet, as Milhazes states: ‘It’s very controlled, every single thing, every piece has a reason. It’s like a mathematical dream.’
