Phillippa Clayden

Phillippa Clayden was born in London in 1955. She completed her BA Honours at the Central School of Art and Design and her Post Graduate Diploma at the Royal Academy Schools, winning the Landseer and Dorothy Morgan prizes in 1981 and 1982. She studied life drawing for six years under Cecil Collins. She has had ten solo exhibitions and numerous group exhibitions across Britain and internationally. Clayden’s process of ‘finding’ images in her materials has been paralleled to Surrealist automatic writing, her imagery described as enigmas evolving through Cornwall, tables and the human psyche. Critic John Russell Taylor described her work as many layered, with an immediate impact that rewards repeated viewing. Her studio has been in Truro since 2012.
