Artist Steve Macleod has worked with us on two projects since 2016. This print formed the foundation for a wall covering for the gym at Bluebell Lodge, a mental health unit that provides intensive rehabilitation for men. About the piece, he said:

“There is a meadow near to where I live that is important to my own mental wellbeing; I sit and walk there to ground myself and untangle my bipolar mess. I created this work in response to the workshop I undertook at the Bluebell Lodge with Hospital Rooms, capturing the shadows cast by the plants and montaging them together to create a work that is both real and imagined.” Steve Macleod, 2018

Julian Opie Four Pigeons T-Shirt

Story

In 2018, Julian Opie created 5 major wall paintings for Eileen Skellern 1, a Psychiatric Intensive Care Unit for women at Maudsley Hospital, including floating ducks and flying pigeons. He photographed these birds in Cornwall and then distilled them into their simplest forms, so that they resemble symbols or hieroglyphs. Patients at Eileen Skellern 1 asked for one of the artworks to feature birds as they felt they represent a sense of freedom. One patient said ‘they are a light in my life.’

Gavin Turk Egg Balance T-Shirt
25.00

Story

In 2016, Gavin Turk created a graphic ‘egg’ vinyl motif titled ‘Egg Balance’ for the Phoenix Unit, a rehabilitation unit for people with a diagnosis of schizophrenia. The egg is a signature for Gavin and repeatedly appears in his work.

“The Gavin Turk piece at the Phoenix Unit is an image of two balancing eggs. It is minimal and conceptual, and you might think it would be difficult to relate to, but patients and staff just loved it. It inspired one patient to start drawing, and reflect on her own experience. She talked about identifying with those eggs, feelings of hope and images of re- birth – this was at a time when she was incredibly low. So, we really learned to be open about how art can have wonderful and transformative effects.”
